11 Unique Things to Do in Tirana, Albania On Your First Visit
If you’re researching the best things to do in Tirana and wondering if Albania’s capital is worth visiting, the answer is yes but probably not for the reasons you expect.
Tirana isn’t a polished, postcard-perfect European city. It’s colourful, a little chaotic, fuelled by strong coffee, and shaped by a recent history that you can still feel as you explore.
We came in with low expectations and left genuinely surprised. Between communist-era bunkers, vibrant city squares, café culture that rivals anywhere in Europe, and easy access to mountain viewpoints just outside the city, there is far more here than most people realise.
In this guide, we break down the best things to do in Tirana that are actually worth your time, where to eat between stops, the top day trips, and how long you really need so you can plan your visit properly.
Table of Contents
Quick Snapshot: Planning Your Things to Do in Tirana
- Ideal stay: 2 to 3 days (More if you can!)
- Best for: First time visitors to Albania
- Walkability: Very high
- Budget level: Affordable
- Vibe: Creative, transitional, café heavy
- Best surprise: How modern meets post communist it feels
If you want to see the main things to do in Tirana without rushing, two full days is ideal. Add a third day if you want to include a nature based day trip.
Looking back, three full days would have been the sweet spot to give us more time in Tirana. But, the beauty is we will have to go back one day! Especially as we didn’t make it to the Albanian Riviera on this trip as we ran out of time and it is a bit of a journey to travel down there.
Our Answer: Best Things to Do in Tirana
Many of these attractions are also included in our guide to the best places to visit in Albania (insert link) if you’re planning a broader trip through the country.
If you only have a short time in Albania’s capital, these are some of the best things to do in Tirana:
- Explore Skanderbeg Square, the heart of the city
- Visit Bunk’Art 2, a fascinating communist-era bunker museum
- Wander the lively Blloku neighbourhood for cafés and nightlife
- Climb the Pyramid of Tirana for city views
- Watch sunset from Sky Tower
- Take a day trip to Lake Bovilla and Gamti Mountain
Together these attractions highlight why Tirana is one of the most interesting cities to visit in Albania.

From Tirana: Bovilla Lake & Gamti Mountain Hiking Tour
Perfect for: Best half day trip, visiting the highlights Pros: Highly rated, guides were awesome even helped take photos Cons: Food excluded, but gives you flexibility to choose
Is Tirana Worth Visiting?
When people search for things to do in Tirana, they often expect grand European architecture and dramatic landmarks.
Tirana is different.
Rather than overwhelming you with centuries-old buildings, the city reveals itself slowly. One moment you’re climbing a former communist monument, the next you’re drinking espresso in a neighbourhood once reserved for political elites.
Few European capitals feel this transitional. You can see Albania moving forward while still carrying the weight of its past and that contrast is part of what makes the things to do in Tirana so interesting.
For us, Tirana felt refreshingly real. It is compact, affordable, easy to explore on foot and a great base for discovering more of Albania.
Full List of Attractions in Tirana
Below are the best things to do in Tirana on your first visit, blending history, culture, food and nature (not necessarily in order):
- #1 Start at Skanderbeg Square
- #2 Go Inside Bunk’Art 2
- #3. Walk (or run) the Grand Park of Tirana
- #4 Explore the Pyramid of Tirana
- #5 Discover the Blloku Neighbourhood
- #6 Walk Through Tirana Castle
- #7 Take a Day Trip to Bovilla Lake
- #8 Sunset at Sky Tower
- #9 Try Traditional Albanian Food
- #10 Walk Across the Tanners’ Bridge
- #11 Enjoy Tirana’s Café Culture
#1 Start at Skanderbeg Square
One of the most important things to do in Tirana is begin at Skanderbeg Square.
This huge pedestrian square is the city’s anchor point. Everything radiates from here, making it the perfect starting point for your Tirana itinerary.
You will see the bold mosaic façade of the National History Museum and the elegant Et’hem Bey Mosque on opposite sides of the square. Locals gather here throughout the day, especially as the light softens in the late afternoon.

If you only have one hour to understand Tirana, start here.
Come in the morning for calm, or late afternoon when the light softens and locals gather. The wide open space also makes it great for photography lovers as well – like me.
One thing we wish we did was a walking tour of the city to learn more about it’s history, culture and way of living. Here is a highly rated walking tour we would have booked if you were interested in that for your trip.

#2 Go Inside Bunk’Art 2
If you are choosing historical things to do in Tirana, Bunk’Art 2 should be high on your list.
Built inside a former nuclear bunker, this museum explores Albania’s communist era and the surveillance state that shaped the country for decades.

Walking through the underground corridors is confronting but essential.
It provides context for the bunkers scattered across Albania and helps you understand how recent much of this history really is (which was surprising for us!)
The corridors below are tight, low and heavy with atmosphere. If you struggle with claustrophobia, it’s worth considering, though I found it manageable. At times I had to wait for others to move through the narrow passageways before properly viewing exhibits. It was fine for Mon though haha!
Allow at least one to one and a half hours for this experience.
It grounds your trip in reality and definitely gave Mon and I perspective what things were like in Albania very recently.

#3. Walk (or run) the Grand Park of Tirana
Among the more relaxed things to do in Tirana is spending time at the Grand Park.
The park wraps around the Artificial Lake and feels like a genuine local escape. You will see runners, dog walkers, cyclists and families enjoying the open space.
We visited early in the morning and found it peaceful and calm, a perfect balance to the intensity of museum visits and city traffic.
If you enjoy exploring cities on foot, this is one of the most rewarding things to do in Tirana.

It balances the intensity of the city. After exploring other parts of Albania and plenty of museums and feeling the traffic first-hand after taking public transport throughout our trip, the park felt calm.
If you’re anything like me and like to explore cities on foot at pace, this is where you’ll feel at home.

#4 Explore the Pyramid of Tirana
Yes, climbing the Pyramid is one of the most unique things to do in Tirana.
Originally built as a museum dedicated to Enver Hoxha, the structure has now been transformed into a public space with terraces and steps that visitors can climb.
Standing at the top gives you a clear sense of Tirana’s layout and surrounding mountains. It also feels symbolic. A former dictator’s monument repurposed into a creative, open space.
It is slightly surreal and surprisingly fun. It is also a great photo spot that includes the city and mountains in the background.

#5 Discover the Blloku Neighbourhood
Exploring Blloku is one of the best things to do in Tirana if you want to experience modern city life.
Once restricted to communist elites, Blloku is now filled with cafés, cocktail bars, boutiques and restaurants. It is compact and easy to explore slowly.
Come during the day for coffee and return in the evening when the social atmosphere builds.
If we were choosing one area to stay near the main things to do in Tirana, this would be it.
Start by simply wandering. Blloku is compact and walkable, so you can move slowly through its streets without needing a strict plan. It’s the kind of area where you’ll naturally stumble across cool corners.

#6 Walk Through Tirana Castle
Tirana Castle offers a slower paced addition to your list of things to do in Tirana.
It is not a dramatic fortress, but rather a compact walled area blending historic stone walls with modern restaurants and artisan shops.
It will not take long to explore, but it is a pleasant stop for lunch or dinner and provides contrast to the surrounding city streets.

#7 Take a Day Trip to Bovilla Lake
If you want to add nature to your list of things to do in Tirana, Bovilla Lake is an excellent choice.
Located about an hour from the city, the hike to the Gamti Mountain viewpoint rewards you with striking turquoise water views.
The trail is short but steep in parts, so wear proper shoes and bring water. We chose Bovilla over Mount Dajti due to time constraints and would absolutely recommend it if you enjoy short hikes with big views.
See our review of our day trip to Bovilla here: insert link and we recommend you give it a try as well.
This is the tour we booked and recommend: From Tirana: Bovilla Lake & Gamti Mountain Hiking Tour. Our guides went above and beyond to take photos, climb up the steep bit (middle photo below) and educated us about the life of locals in Tirana and the impact of communism there.

#8 Sunset at Sky Tower
For elevated views, Sky Tower is one of the easier things to do in Tirana.
The revolving Sky Club offers panoramic views of the skyline and surrounding mountains. Arrive late afternoon, order a drink and watch the city shift into golden hour.
It is not essential, but it is an easy way to gain perspective on your first visit.
Since we are always looking for a good sunset view, this would be the place to watch the sunset in Tirana.
There are no entry fees, you can just order a drink there.

#9 Try Traditional Albanian Food
Trying local food is easily one of the most enjoyable things to do in Tirana.
Safe options (and tasty) include Byrek, tavë kosi, grilled meats and fresh salads. These are all must tries during your time in Albania. Personally, I really enjoyed the large servings and I don’t think we had a bad meal in Tirana.
You’ll find the places we enjoyed below, feel free to check them out and we recommend going to all of them if you can and add them to your things to do in Tirana!
- Oda Garden Restaurant – I recommend booking in advance!
Wanting a traditional sit down experience in the middle of Tirana, this was what we opted for. A varied menu with plenty of options. The lamb and salad were delicious. If I visit Tirana again, I’d go here.

Traditional Albanian food with a welcoming, cozy atmosphere and the prices were excellent. Yes, it was worth it.

- OPA – Greek Street Food (9 Katëshet)
Yes, we know, this isn’t Albanian cuisine… We saw this Greek fast food restaurant after a long day exploring and gave it a try. We weren’t disappointed and either will you be!

If you are building your list of essential things to do in Tirana, eating well should be near the top.
The food, at its core, is simple, hearty and satisfying after long walking days and can be washed down with a nice cold “Tirana” beer (if you’re into that!)

#10 Walk Across the Tanners’ Bridge
Tanners’ Bridge is one of the quieter historical things to do in Tirana.
This small Ottoman era stone bridge is tucked away near several major attractions. It will not take long to visit, but it adds texture and historical depth to your walking route.
We visited at different times of day and found the changing light altered the atmosphere completely.

#11 Enjoy Tirana’s Café Culture
Experiencing café culture is one of the simplest yet most authentic things to do in Tirana.
Coffee is social here. Cafés are full throughout the day, and people linger rather than rush.
Sit down, order your espresso and watch life unfold around you.
Komiteti – Kafe Muzeum is particularly memorable, blending café bar energy with museum-like displays of Albania’s past. With more than 3000+ individual items on display, it takes you on adventure where you can drink, eat and explore.
Located on Rruga Papa Gjon Pali II near the city centre and Blloku, it blends café-bar vibes with a compact museum feel, its walls and shelves filled with everyday objects from Albania’s past, making it one of Tirana’s most unique and memorable stops.
It is also a bar so you can order a beer or a Raki cocktail that Mon very much enjoyed!

Order your brew as you like it and sit longer than you planned. Watch life unfold as nothing beats spending a little bit of time as a local and people watching to understand the Tirana lifestyle.
The coffee and service was great at Hana Corner Café with good vibes and plenty of outdoor seating space to enjoy the atmosphere and brew. This is near Blloku area. This trendy cafe had plenty of outdoor space and, most importantly, did very good coffee.

Notable Extras
We didn’t have the time to fit everything in, but if we had an extra day or two, we would have looked into the below – and think you should as well.
So, if you have more time, consider:
- Bunk’Art 1 – This is larger than Bunk’Art 2 but also located further out from the centre of Tirana so factor this in if you want to go here.
- House of Leaves – Museum of Secret Surveillance – we REALLY wanted to go here but just didn’t have the time unfortunately. Leave a comment if you’ve been and if you recommend it!
- Dajti Ekspres – Cable car to Mount Dajti and another potential half day trip. Here is a day trip that includes transport too. We opted for Bovilla but you could do this instead.
- National History Museum – For a broader historical overview and more Albanian context if you’re into this.
- Visit the inside of Et’hem Bey Mosque – We only saw this from the outside, but the interior is meant to be a gem of Islamic architecture.
Other day trips from Tirana:
On this trip, we went to Berat and Krujë / Kruja and stayed there for one night. If you have extra time in the capital, consider these day trips from Tirana including Bovilla Lake and Krujë.
We recommend doing a day trip from Tirana with the following options:
- From Tirana: Kruja Castle, Old Bazaar & Sari Salltik View
- Takes you to the main parts of Kruja. We enjoyed our stay here, it still feels a bit untouched so we recommend going before everyone else knows about this place.
- From Tirana: Berat UNESCO Heritage & Belshi Lake Tour
- Takes you to this UNESCO town that is known to be the town with a “thousand windows”. This place also still feels raw and peaceful.
Lastly, one day trip that we probably would have booked is a day trip to a NEW country! We haven’t been to North Macedonia but if we had time in Tirana, we would have booked this day trip to Lake Ohrid.

Final Thoughts
Tirana isn’t polished in the way Western European capitals are. That’s exactly why we loved it. Some of our favourite moments in Tirana weren’t on any list, or even included above.
Colourful apartment blocks. Unexpected murals. Local markets and seeing how and what the locals do was very interesting.
It’s evolving. It’s colourful. It feels like a city writing its next chapter in real time and there certainly are plenty of things to do in Tirana.
