Day 1: Arrive in Tirana and Head Straight to Berat

Overnight: Berat

Albanian Arrival

After landing at Tirana International Airport, we made a deliberate choice with our Albania itinerary: go straight to Berat.

Even if it did cause a little bit of stress navigating Albania’s public transport. See tips and tricks for this in our other blog post: insert link.

It takes roughly 3 to 4 hours in total to reach Berat from the airport (including the transfer into Tirana and the onward bus), but pushing through on arrival means you get the chance to wake up somewhere truly special and not rush Berat in a half day.

Evening in Berat

Berat is known as the City of a Thousand Windows, and the first glimpse explains why. White Ottoman houses stack dramatically up the hillside above the Osum River, glowing gold in the late afternoon light.

After checking in to our hotel, we kept it simple:

  • Wander through the Mangalem neighbourhood – our hotel, Hotel Ansel , was located and given how much we enjoyed our stay, how affordable it was, AND the amazing breakfast, you should book it too here!
  • Cross the historic Gorica Bridge to see the city of a thousand windows from the other side of the river
  • We climbed up Berat Castle to see the town lit up at night from above
  • Slow dinner enjoying local food and wine – we went here, which I would recommend and enjoyed some home-style and comforting Albanian cuisine: ELVI~Tradicional Food & Grill.
  • Mon bought some souvenirs (pottery bowls) from Gift Shop Mio.
  • An easy night to reset after travel

Berat is compact and walkable, which makes it perfect for your first evening in Albania.

Check our review of Hotel Ansel in our dedicated post about it.

Day 2: Berat Morning and On to Krujë

Overnight: Krujë

Morning in Berat

Waking up inside Berat is one of the highlights of this Albania itinerary.

I took advantage of Mon having a sleep in and I jogged to the viewpoint of Berat. Starting from the hotel, I ran along the Osum River all the way to the Ura e re (New Bridge).

I followed this road and ran through a local market and saw villagers commuting to this to both buy and sell produce and goods. This was a really cool experience for me and you might spot some local farm animals!

From there, there I followed the road until I found a trail which tool me up a steep incline to Punkt widokowy which provided epic views of Berat and the Gorica Bridge below.

Bear in mind the lookout point does require a steep ascent to so keep that in mind if you want to try and add this to your Albania itinerary.

The trail down was more straightforward and ended up in the Gorica Quarter of town.

Mon and I also crossed the Gorica Bridge together again and took the views in of the town and river. It really has a little bit of everything.

The traditional white houses, fast-flowing river, mountains in the background on one side and a valley looking out over the other other side if you look past the Gorica Bridge.

Early morning light here is softer, quieter and far less crowded than midday when day trippers arrive.

A slow coffee and traditional Albanian breakfast at Hotel Ansel was one of those unexpectedly memorable travel moments.

Served on the terrace overlooking the river and the white Ottoman houses climbing the hillside, it felt calm, generous and distinctly Albanian.

There was fresh bread, local cheeses, olives, eggs, tomatoes, homemade jams and strong coffee that actually tasted like coffee.

Nothing overly fancy, just simple, fresh ingredients done well, with a view that makes you slow down whether you intend to or not. It was the perfect way to start a morning in Berat.

Mon really liked the combination of fresh bread, fresh goats cheese, their local plum-tasting jam, and a drizzle of honey – we sometimes re-create this at home for breakfast and remember our time in Albania.

Looking back, this experience sealed just how much we enjoyed Berat.

Afternoon and Evening in Krujë

There is no direct bus from Berat to Krujë, so you connect via Tirana. It sounds complicated, but it’s straightforward and affordable.

Arriving in Krujë feels completely different from Berat. Higher elevation. Cooler air. Dramatic mountain backdrop.

We stayed at Kruja Albergo Diffuso, a collection of restored traditional houses scattered throughout the old bazaar area. Instead of staying near the historic centre, you are staying inside it. We highly recommended staying here if you can!

It is a concept from Italy called “Albergo Diffuso” brought to Albania and was recognised as National Geographic’s “Best of the world hotels” in 2024.

You can find a review of our stay (insert link) there will give you more information on the accommodation and if it fits you and your budget.

That afternoon we:

  • Wandered the cobbled lanes of the Old Bazaar (a 400 year old Bazaar)
  • Enjoyed lunch in the market area of Krujë at Snack Bar Derexhiku – which was very good and affordable traditional food with a good atmosphere in the Old Bazaar itself
  • Explored Krujë castle and the museum
  • Took in sweeping valley views
  • Watched the town empty out once day-trippers left
  • Enjoyed the sunset on castle grounds
  • Had a beautiful dinner (and wine) at Restaurant Bardhi – I would recommend checking online and booking in advance in summer

Krujë Old Bazaar

Krujë castle & views at the top of the castle

Spending the night in Krujë transforms it from a quick stop into a calm, atmospheric experience.

Day 3: Krujë Morning and Tirana Afternoon

Overnight: Tirana

Breakfast in Krujë overlooking the mountains is reason enough not to rush this Albania itinerary.

When we stayed Kruja Albergo Diffuso, renovations were still taking place. So, we had to find our own breakfast. This was fine and we did some quick research and found nearby.

Bar Restorant Merlika provides breakfast, is close to the Castle of Kruja and if needed, could serve as a base for a night’s stay in the town.

For some accommodation options in Krujë, which are centrally located, see below:

By late morning, after a coffee at Hotel Restaurant Panorama Krujë , we walked back through Krujë to the bus terminal (remember: these don’t look like bus stations in the usual sense) and you could buy refreshments and snacks inside.

You can see me pictured below with the driver, I can’t remember what we were saying haha but it was a nice relaxing point before starting our trip while waiting for other passengers and the departure time!

We departed on the furgon and we were headed back to Tirana as our next stop on our Albania itinerary, this time to stay.

First Impressions of Tirana

Tirana is vibrant, creative and evolving fast. It was a pleasant surprise for us. If you are after more detail of things to do in Tirana, check out our post on it for more information.

Start your Albania itinerary Tirana exploration by visiting Skanderbeg Square, the city’s wide central plaza surrounded by museums and government buildings. It’s the heart of modern Albania and the perfect orientation point.

We were hungry and needed lunch. I had found a traditional restaurant near Skanderbeg Square which served good quality and good priced food: Taverna Paidhaqe DAJKUA – Google Maps link.

Not far from the Skanderbeg Square is Bunk’Art 2. Bunk’Art 2 is a former Cold War nuclear bunker transformed into a powerful museum dedicated to Albania’s communist-era secret police.

Built to protect government officials during a potential nuclear attack, the underground bunker now guides visitors through dark corridors and preserved rooms that document surveillance, imprisonment and daily life under the regime.

From there, wander into Blloku, once reserved for communist elites and now the social core of the city.

Cafés spill onto sidewalks, bars fill quickly in the evenings, and there’s a clear energy shift compared to the historic towns.

Mon had been recommended Komiteti Bar and the concept of a café/bar/museum–in-one was interesting and we definitely recommend going here! Mon enjoyed the Raki cocktails.

We wanted to walk back to Skanderbeg and see the square at night.

This was a pretty cool experience and it had come alive with locals and tourists alike and the usual hustle that occurs at the main square of a city.

It was nice to see the murals and soak thin the architecture of the buildings and see them lit up at night. Definitely add seeing Skanderbeg Square at different times of the day to your Albania itinerary.

Tirana may not be conventionally beautiful, but it is alive. And that’s what makes it compelling.

Day 4: Bovilla Lake and Sunset Over Tirana

Overnight: Tirana

This was one of our favourite days of the entire Albania itinerary.

Morning: Lake Bovilla and Gamti Mountain

We joined a half-day guided trip to Lake Bovilla and Gamti Mountain.

You can find the tour we booked here: From Tirana: Bovilla Lake & Gamti Mountain Hiking Tour. We highly recommend joining this day trip tour if you don’t plan on renting a car. Our guides were really good and informative also about life in Tirana and Albania in general.

Within an hour of leaving Tirana, the city disappeared behind us and we were surrounded by dramatic cliffs and turquoise water.

The short but steep hike to the viewpoint delivers one of the best panoramas in central Albania and should be thought about being added to any Albania itinerary.

The trail is rocky in parts, so proper shoes are essential, but it’s manageable for most fitness levels.

There was a stop for lunch at a nearby restaurant, which was more traditional Albanian food, which we enjoyed.

For more on our day trip, you can see our detailed breakdown, review and whether we recommend it.

By early afternoon, we were back in Tirana.

Afternoon and Evening in Tirana

The rest of the day was intentionally slow.

Albania takes coffee seriously, and sitting in shaded cafés watching the city move is one of the simplest pleasures here. For a good coffee we recommend checking out Hana Corner Café.

Albania Itinerary

For sunset, we headed up the Sky Tower for views across the city. Mountains on one side. Dense urban energy on the other.

We closed the night with a traditional Albanian dinner. Oda Garden Restaurant – I recommend booking in advance!

Wanting a traditional sit down experience in the middle of Tirana, this was what we opted for. A varied menu with plenty of options. The lamb and salad were delicious. If I visit Tirana again, I’d go here.

Of course, choose the foods that you would enjoy but I would recommend a combination of the below:

  • Byrek
  • Tavë kosi
  • Grilled meats
  • Fresh salads
  • Local wine or beer

It felt like the right way to end our final full day.

Day 5: Departure or Extra Time Options

We had an early flight home back to Düsseldorf, so for Mon and I it was a straightforward transfer to the airport from our hotel.

If you have extra time in your Albania itinerary, consider the below:

  • Taking the cable car up Mount Dajti for sweeping views
  • Visiting Bunk’Art 1 for deeper insight into Albania’s communist history
  • Exploring Pazari i Ri for produce and souvenirs
  • Doing a relaxed café crawl through Blloku

This flexibility makes the itinerary easy to extend as you require and adapt accordingly.

Why This Albania Itinerary Works So Well

What makes this Albania itinerary ideal is the balance:

  • Ottoman heritage in Berat
  • Mountain drama and history in Krujë
  • Urban energy in Tirana
  • Wild nature at Lake Bovilla

Each destination contrasts the next. You never feel stuck in one rhythm for too long.

Travel times are manageable. Towns are walkable. And every overnight stay feels intentional rather than rushed.

For a first Albania itinerary, that balance is everything.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 5 days enough for an Albania itinerary?

Yes. A 5 day Albania itinerary is perfect for a first visit if you focus on central highlights like Tirana, Berat and Krujë. This route gives you a mix of history, culture, mountains and city life without feeling rushed.

What is the best time of year to follow this Albania itinerary?

Late spring (May–June) and early autumn (September–October) are perfect. You’ll get warm weather, fewer crowds and comfortable hiking conditions for places like Lake Bovilla.

How long should you stay in Berat?

One night is enough to explore the old town, wander Mangalem, cross Gorica Bridge and visit Berat Castle. Staying overnight lets you experience the town before and after day-trippers arrive and should be part of your Albania itinerary.

Is Krujë worth staying overnight?

Absolutely and should be a part of your Albania itinerary. Most visitors do Krujë as a day trip, but staying overnight makes it quieter and more atmospheric.

The mountain setting and sunset views feel completely different once the crowds leave.

How difficult is the hike at Lake Bovilla?

The hike to the main viewpoint is short but steep and rocky in parts. It’s manageable for most people with decent fitness and proper shoes, and the panoramic views are worth the effort.

The additional “hike” atop the point to get the additional lookout and view was also fine but I would recommend taking it slow and first checking if you think you can climb the rock safely and also won’t be afraid of getting back down.

Can you realistically see Tirana in two days?

Yes. Two nights in Tirana allows time to explore Skanderbeg Square, Blloku, enjoy café culture, take a half-day trip to Lake Bovilla and experience a traditional Albanian dinner without feeling like you are rushing.

We would have loved to have more time in Tirana but our Albania itinerary had more locations in it so we had to spread this out evenly as best we could and hope you do the same to get a true appreciation for Albania.

Note, this Albania itinerary doesn’t include the Albanian Riviera. This deserves another trip entirely and we hope to do this one day in the future!

Please leave a comment if you have visited there and what you recommend!

Final Thoughts

Before visiting, we weren’t entirely sure what to expect.

What we found was a country that feels raw but welcoming. Compact but diverse. Historic yet evolving at the same time.

This 5 day Albania itinerary proves you don’t need weeks to experience depth here. In less than a week, you can wander Ottoman streets, hike above turquoise lakes, explore medieval castles and sip espresso in a capital city reinventing itself.

And honestly, it surprised us in the best possible way.
