What to Do in Berat: A Perfect One Night Guide to Albania’s Most Beautiful Town

If you’re planning your trip and wondering what to do in Berat, here’s the one thing you should know first don’t rush it.

We almost visited Berat as a quick day trip and that would’ve been a mistake. Once the crowds left, the town completely changed. It became quieter, slower, and easily one of the most atmospheric places we visited in Albania.

Known as the “City of a Thousand Windows”, Berat stands out for its Ottoman architecture, riverside setting, and relaxed pace that feels nothing like Tirana or Krujë.

In this guide, we’ll show you exactly what to do in Berat based on our experience, including the must-see spots, a simple one-day itinerary, where to stay, and why spending at least one night here makes all the difference.

Quick Snapshot: What to Do in Berat

If you’re short on time, here’s a quick overview of what to do in Berat: More details below!

  • Wander the Mangalem Quarter (Old Town)
  • Cross the Gorica Bridge for the best views
  • Explore Berat Castle and its living neighbourhood
  • Walk along the Osum River promenade
  • Watch sunset over the “thousand windows”
  • Enjoy a traditional Albanian dinner
  • Slow breakfast with a view the next morning

For us, this combination made Berat one of the most memorable stops on our Albania trip.

Why Visit Berat?

Berat is one of the most iconic places to visit in Albania, and it feels completely different from Tirana or Krujë.

The town is built along the Osum River, with white Ottoman houses stacked up the hillside, creating that famous “window” effect. It’s also a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which tells you a lot about its historical significance.

What makes Berat special isn’t just how it looks, it’s how it feels.

For us, it felt slower. Quieter. More atmospheric.

And once the day-trippers left, that’s when we enjoyed it the most.

If you’re building your trip, we break down exactly where Berat fits into your trip, especially for first-timers.

What to Do in Berat: The Perfect One Night Itinerary

If you only have one night in Berat, this itinerary focuses on the moments that matter most. From wandering the historic Mangalem quarter to sunset views from the castle and a slow morning by the river, this guide is designed to help you experience the best of Berat without feeling rushed.

If you’re planning a broader trip, we’ve mapped out exactly how to connect Berat with Tirana and Krujë in our Albania itinerary for first-time visitors, including transport tips and where to stay.

Afternoon: Arrive and Explore Mangalem Quarter

The best way to start your time in Berat is simple. Drop your bags and start walking.

The Mangalem Quarter is the historic heart of Berat and one of the most recognisable places in Albania. Narrow cobbled streets wind between white Ottoman houses, small cafés and local homes.

This is where Berat felt the most authentic.

We stayed right near this area, which made everything easy to access. Within minutes, we were walking through history without really needing a plan.

What to do here:

  • Wander aimlessly through the streets
  • Stop for coffee or a drink
  • Take photos of the iconic hillside houses
  • Soak in the slower pace compared to Tirana

It’s the kind of place where doing less is actually better.

Late Afternoon: Cross Gorica Bridge for the Best Views

If there’s one thing you do in Berat, make it this.

Walk across the Gorica Bridge and turn back toward Mangalem.

This is where you get that postcard view. The white houses stacked on top of each other, the river flowing below and mountains in the background.

We crossed this bridge multiple times during our stay, and every time felt different depending on the light!

Best time to go: Late afternoon heading into sunset.

Sunset: Climb to Berat Castle

Next up, head to Berat Castle, one of the most unique things to do in Berat.

Unlike most castles, this isn’t just ruins. People still live inside the castle walls. There are homes, churches, cafés and narrow streets that feel like a village within a fortress.

The walk up takes a bit of effort, but it’s worth it.

Why you should go:

  • Panoramic views over Berat and the Osum River
  • A completely different perspective of the town
  • A quieter, more local atmosphere
  • One of the best sunset spots in Berat

We slightly underestimated the time it would take to walk up and just missed the full sunset, so if you’re going, give yourself enough time.

Evening: Riverside Dinner and Slow Pace

After exploring the castle, head back down and keep the evening simple.

Berat isn’t really a nightlife destination. It’s more about slowing down, enjoying a good meal and soaking in the atmosphere.

We found that dinner here felt relaxed and unhurried, which matched the overall vibe of the town. We recommend some home-style and comforting Albanian cuisine at ELVI~Tradicional Food & Grill.

What to try:

  • Byrek (Albanian pastry)
  • Grilled meats
  • Fresh salads
  • Local wine

Sitting by the river at night with the lights reflecting off the hillside was one of those moments that sticks with you.

If you want some local souvenirs, Mon got some colourful bowls from Gift Shop Mio. This place was close to the restaurant.

Where to Stay in Berat

If you’re deciding where to stay, location matters.

We stayed at Hotel Ansel, which we’d genuinely recommend. It’s right near the river and Mangalem, making everything walkable.

We had room that had a small view of the river and the thousand windows.

But what stood out most wasn’t just the location.

It was the breakfast (more details and pictures below!)

Morning in Berat: One of the Best Places to Wake up to

Waking up in Berat is completely different from arriving.

The town is quiet. Soft light hits the hillside. The river flows slowly.

This is when Berat feels at its best.

I actually went for a run along the Osum River toward the Ura e re (New Bridge) and ended up passing through a local market with villagers setting up for the day.

It wasn’t planned. But it ended up being one of the most memorable parts of the trip.

Breakfast with a View (Our Highlight)

Back at our hotel, breakfast was simple but perfect.

Fresh bread, local cheese, eggs, olives, tomatoes, homemade jam and strong coffee.

Nothing overly fancy. Just done well.

Mon especially loved the combination of:

  • Fresh bread
  • Goat cheese
  • Plum jam
  • Honey

It’s one of those things we still recreate at home.

And honestly, this breakfast alone is a reason to stay overnight in Berat.

Optional: Berat Viewpoint Walk (If You Have Energy)

If you want something a bit more active, there’s a viewpoint hike above Berat that gives incredible views over the town and river.

It’s a steep incline, so not for everyone, but if you’re up for it, it’s worth the effort.

Otherwise, keep it simple. Berat doesn’t need to be overplanned.

How Long Do You Need in Berat?

For most travellers, one night in Berat is perfect.

It gives you:

  • An afternoon to explore
  • A sunset at the castle
  • A relaxed evening
  • A quiet morning experience

The early morning and evening atmosphere is what sets it apart.
