Tirana Highlights: Best Places to Visit in Albania’s Capital

Tirana surprised us in the best way. It felt like a unique blend of modern and recent raw history with an element of trendiness that captivated Mon and I. Read our dedicated post on Tirana for more information on what to see and do there.

1. Skanderbeg Square

Skanderbeg Square sits at the centre of Tirana and is the natural starting point for exploring the city.

Surrounded by landmarks like the National History Museum, the Et’hem Bey Mosque and colourful Italian-era buildings, the square reflects Albania’s layered history in one place.

During the day locals cross the vast open space on foot or bike, while evenings often bring families, street performers and a lively atmosphere.

For many travellers, Skanderbeg Square is where exploring the best places to visit in Albania’s capital begins.

2. Bunk’Art 2

Bunk’Art 2 is one of the most fascinating places to visit in Albania for understanding the country’s communist past.

Located underground in a former nuclear bunker built during Albania’s dictatorship, the museum tells the story of Albania’s secret police and surveillance system.

Walking through the dim corridors and preserved rooms gives a powerful sense of the paranoia and isolation Albania experienced during that period.

It is immersive, sobering and easily one of the most memorable museums in Albania.

3. Blloku Neighbourhood

Once reserved exclusively for communist elites, Blloku has transformed into Tirana’s most vibrant neighbourhood.

Today it is packed with cafés, cocktail bars and restaurants, making it the perfect place to experience Albania’s famous coffee culture.

We spent hours wandering the streets here, stopping for espresso and people watching.

If you want to see modern Tirana, Blloku is one of the liveliest places to visit in Albania’s capital.

4. The Pyramid of Tirana

The Pyramid is one of Tirana’s most unusual landmarks.

Originally built as a museum dedicated to dictator Enver Hoxha, the structure has since been transformed into a public cultural space.

Visitors can climb the stepped sides of the building for panoramic views across the city.

Today it stands as a symbol of Albania’s complex past and its evolving future.

5. Sky Tower (Sky Club)

For sunset views over the city, Sky Tower is one of the best places to visit in Tirana.

Located near the Blloku district, the tower offers sweeping views across the capital with mountains rising in the distance.

Watching the light fade over Tirana’s colourful buildings gives a completely different perspective of the city.

It is a great way to end a day exploring the best places to visit in Albania’s capital.

6. Tirana Castle

Despite its name, Tirana Castle feels more like a historic district than a traditional fortress.

Inside the preserved stone walls you will find artisan shops, restaurants and cafés tucked between narrow lanes.

It is a relaxed place to wander, grab a drink and enjoy a quieter side of the city centre.

7. Komiteti Kafe Muzeum

Komiteti Kafe Muzeum is one of Tirana’s most unique cafés.

The space doubles as a small museum filled with everyday objects from Albania’s past.

Shelves are lined with vintage radios, household items and historical artefacts while visitors sip traditional Albanian raki or coffee.

It is quirky, atmospheric and easily one of the most interesting places to visit in Albania for culture lovers.

8. Lake Bovilla

Located about an hour from Tirana, Lake Bovilla offers some of the most dramatic scenery near the capital.

The lake’s turquoise water is surrounded by rugged mountains, and the short hike up Gamti Mountain leads to a spectacular viewpoint overlooking the entire valley.

The landscape feels remote and wild, a striking contrast to Tirana’s busy streets.

It was easily one of our favourite places to visit in Albania outside the capital.

If you want to visit the lake yourself, we share everything you need to know in our complete guide to the Bovilla Lake day trip from Tirana (insert link), one of the most scenic places to visit in Albania.

Berat Highlights: UNESCO Old Town Beauty

Berat is easily one of the most beautiful places to visit in Albania, known for its Ottoman architecture and UNESCO listed old town.

9. Berat Old Town (Mangalem Quarter)

Often called the “City of a Thousand Windows,” Berat’s hillside houses are one of Albania’s most recognisable sights.

The Ottoman-era homes stack above each other along the Osum River, creating a unique architectural landscape that has earned UNESCO World Heritage status.

Mon and I also walked around the cobbled streets, crossed the Gorica Bridge multiple times and took the views in of the town and river. It really has a little bit of everything.

We stayed in Berat for one night and although you can do it as a day trip, we recommend staying the night to experience this small town after the day-trippers leave town.

The hotel we stayed had an amazing breakfast spread and view of the town and it was affordable. We still remember and re-make the breakfast they served us there! We 100% recommend it.

10. Berat Castle

Berat Castle is more than just a fortress, it is an entire historic neighbourhood.

Families still live inside the castle walls alongside churches, museums and small cafés.

The views across Berat at the Berat Viewing Platform, especially at night and being lit up, and the surrounding mountains make the climb completely worth it.

It would be the perfect place to see the sunset. Unfortunately, we just missed the sunset when we got there as the walk took longer than we anticipated ha.

11. Osum River Promenade

The riverfront is one of the best places to experience Berat’s atmosphere.

Walking along the Osum River provides and crossing both the Gorica Bridge and Ura e Varur gives you perspective of both sides of Berat and incredible views of the Mangalem quarter and surrounding mountains.

I took advantage of Mon having a sleep in one morning and I jogged to the viewpoint of Berat. Starting from the hotel, I ran along the Osum River all the way to the Ura e re (New Bridge).

I followed this road and ran through a local market and saw villagers commuting to this to both buy and sell produce and goods. This was a really cool experience for me and you might spot some local farm animals!

Around sunset the golden light reflecting off the white Ottoman houses makes this one of the most photogenic places to visit in Albania.

Krujë Highlights: History and Mountain Views

If you enjoy history and mountain scenery, Krujë is one of the most rewarding places to visit in Albania.

12. Krujë Bazaar

The 400 year old bazaar in Krujë is one of the most atmospheric markets in Albania and one of our highlights!

Lined with wooden stalls and traditional shops, the cobbled street sells handmade carpets, antiques and local souvenirs.

The setting beneath the mountains gives the entire market a timeless atmosphere.

It was also interesting because some of the stalls were selling modern kids toys and clothes for the locals.

13. Krujë Castle

Krujë Castle played a crucial role in Albania’s resistance against the Ottoman Empire.

Today it houses the Skanderbeg Museum and offers sweeping views across the surrounding valley.

Walking through the historic walls gives a powerful sense of Albania’s medieval history.

14. Krujë Viewpoints

One of the best things about Krujë is simply the scenery.

From the castle, in particular the Watch Tower of Kruja, and surrounding hills you can see across vast valleys and mountain landscapes stretching towards the Adriatic coast.

The views feel dramatically different from the cities below and make Krujë one of the most scenic places to visit in Albania.

Our Travel tip: You can grab a coffee with a view at the The Hotel Panorama where you can enjoy the views of Krujë.

15. Kruja Albergo Diffuso

For a unique overnight stay, Kruja Albergo Diffuso is one of the most memorable places to stay in Albania.

We were lucky enough to find this place after National Geographic named it one of “Best in Travel” in 2024.

The hotel spreads guest rooms across restored historic houses within the old town, allowing visitors to experience traditional architecture while staying close to the bazaar and castle.

We stayed overnight here and shared our full experience in our Kruja Albergo Diffuso Review – one of the most unique places to stay in Albania.

Staying overnight also allows you to experience Krujë once the day-trip crowds disappear.

More Places to Visit in Albania (For Future Trips)

While Tirana, Berat and Krujë are some of the most accessible places to visit in Albania, the country has many more destinations worth exploring that we wish we were able to visit.

Some of the most popular additions include:

  • Theth National Park in the Albanian Alps
  • Gjirokastër, another UNESCO-listed Ottoman town

We hope to explore these on a future trip and add them to our growing list of places to visit in Albania!
